Understanding Currents

In this lesson we look at the various types of moving water that you may encounter whilst on your paddleboard, and the safety implications thereof. Since fast flowing water is such an important consideration in SUP safety, the knowledge within this unit is potentially life saving.

Understanding Surf

In this lesson from the SUP SAFE safety education course,  we look at surf, from the paddleboarder’s point of view. What it is, where it comes from, how to gauge it and judge its suitability for paddleboarding, and much more. This is quite a long lesson, as to be honest it’s a complete topic in itself, and many millions of words have been written on this topic. If you don’t have any plans on going paddleboarding anywhere near surf any time soon, you can probably skip this one, but do remember to come back and check it out if/as/when the opportunity for a coastal SUP session arises!

In the next lesson, we’ll look at water temperature and quality, both of which can have a significant impact on your wellbeing!

Implications of Tides

In this lesson we consider the actual implications of the various states of the tide, from the point of view of planning your SUP session, and the safety implications thereof.

Understanding the conditions – summary

Now that we’ve looked in detail at all the various aspects that you need to know about, we go back to the initial plan and put it all into context. 

In the next and final lesson of this section on understanding the conditions we introduce the SUP SAFE code, a simple 5 point plan that puts everything we’ve covered in this section of the SUP SAFE coruse together.
