The second in our series of free education courses covering all aspects of SUP safety. In this course we focus on weather and water conditions. Understanding them is a vital aspect of SUP safety, as is knowing how to find out what is forecast.

Stand up paddleboarding may seem like a very safe sport , yet every year hundreds of paddleboarders end up getting into trouble, getting rescued – and tragically, sometimes the story does not end well. It almost always comes down to education – those paddlers getting into trouble were missing some critical knowledge. Hence this course. It will give you the knowledge that may well end up saving your life!

The course is completely free, and you can spend as long as you like working through the lessons. As you’ll see from the list of lessons below, all the information is broken down into bite-sized chunks so you can work through it at your leisure – or just pick out the bits you’re interested in. So – what are you waiting for? Let’s get started!

This course has been brought to you with assistance from the Maritime NZ Safer Boating Forum, and Water Safety New Zealand.

This is the best online SUP course there is!

A brilliant resource packed with life-saving information, full of humour and left me with a greater sense of safety and peace of mind out in the water. Thank you so much for making this course and making it available for all!

Again, more information than I ever expected

I will be repeating this course every few months, because there is so much good information in it, and it will take me a while to really absorb it all. Incredibly valuable information for any paddleboarder. Would have liked to see a bit more on rivers, or maybe links to more information on those, as I understand that they are probably enough for a whole course on their own.

Excellent course

Like the other safety course, there is a huge amount of information here, some of the lessons are quite long and it times it can be a bit overloading. I soon realised that the best approach is not to do more than a couple of lessons in a session. And I repeated some of them as well, because there is so much good stuff here you want to be able to take it all in.

So much information!

I learned way more than I expected to from this course. As a sailor I thought I knew a lot about the weather but the way this course approaches it, made things so much more clear and relevant. Really good course, especially as it's completely free!

Every paddler should do this course

Not being an ocean person, I did not realise there was so much I needed to know. This course has probably saved me about 1000 mistakes! Fantastic for a free course. Every paddler should do this.

even better than the other one!

I thought your first safety course on equipment was good but I actually learned more in this one. I've done several online safety courses, and was thinking that because these courses are free, they would be lightweight. But they are better and more thorough than any of the others I have done and paid for. I don't know how you are funding this but keep up the good work, it's amazing!
